Book Review: Killer Cupcakes
A Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery by Leighann Dobbs
Writer Leighann Dobbs came to my attention when I was looking for authors who shared my name. Amazon took note of my search and viewing history, and let me know that her book “Killer Cupcakes” was available for free (at the time). I don’t recall if it was only for Prime Members or a bonus for Kindle Unlimited Trial Members, but I took advantage of the offer and downloaded it for later (at the time of this review, it is priced at $3.99 for Kindle | $7.99 paperback).
Having finished a book the day before, I was looking for something to start quickly (so as not to break my streak of consecutive days reading on my Kindle, which is currently at 234 day/44 weeks). Since this short novel was in my library, I decided to start it to see what I thought. At just 103 pages, I finished it the next day.
It is what I would term as light reading, written well enough to flow and keep one interested, but definitely not challenging in vocabulary or deductive skills. Littered with clichés, stereotypes, and predictable outcomes, it still wasn’t a bad read but not the best or more intriguing of its genre.
I used to bake cupcakes A LOT, and people really liked them. They were seldom completely from scratch, but I still doctored cake mixes and made my own frosting to make them special. Then, before sharing I would take creative photos of them.
It’s been quite a while since I’ve baked much of anything (at least Christmas), let alone cupcakes. During the pandemic, we both cut back on sugary treats and focused on buying from small locally owned bakeries to help them stay afloat, which only accounts for part of it, as we’ve since returned to eating more treats and buying said sweets from major retailers.
Still, if nothing else, this did put me in the mood to consider getting back to baking for us a bit more.
If you enjoyed my book review or perhaps my cupcake photos made you drool, please offer a clap or even a round of applause. Please leave a comment if you read this book after reading my review.
