Randy died this morning. You don’t know him, of course. I didn’t know him that well either. Not really — he was an acquaintance and colleague and also a good person. Now he is gone, and it is truly all our loss.

Two and a half years ago, Randy and I were in the same orientation class for Carfax. When we met in the hallway or kitchen, we exchanged pleasantries. He always wore a big smile and frequently big ol’ cowboy boots. He was a kind, friendly man who loved his wife, and she loved him. You could see it in their eyes and faces whenever they were together. They never had children, just a cat, and you could see they were the entire world to each other. He came to work at Carfax because of her. And they worked together happily.

Last fall I learned that Randy had pancreatic cancer, and it was basically eating him alive. He was diagnosed in September, and he was on disability and confined to his home full-time by November…when the news made it to me through company grapevine.

My co-worker and friend (in the cubicle next to mine) found out at the same time I did. We wanted to do something to help so we went and worked in their yard one Saturday afternoon — nothing big, just raking leaves and cleaning gutters and the like. We gave Sherry a gift basket with tea and…
